Dungeon Cards
Roguelike puzzle card battles in bite sized dungeon runs
Dungeon Cards takes the core tension of a dungeon crawler and compresses it into a clever 3x3 grid, where every move is both a risk and a tiny puzzle. You control a single hero card sliding between eight surrounding cards that can be monsters, traps, treasures, healing, or powerful specials. Moving onto a card resolves its effect instantly, so one hasty swipe can be the difference between a perfect combo and a brutal death.
What makes Dungeon Cards stand out is how readable yet deep its design is. Each turn is fully deterministic: you can see enemy stats, your own health, and possible outcomes, so success depends more on planning than luck. The rules are easy to grasp in minutes, but mastering how to chain kills, manage health, and manipulate the grid for long-term survival is surprisingly demanding.
The roguelike framework reinforces this tension. Runs are short (often under 15 minutes), maps are procedurally generated, and permadeath means every mistake stings—but also makes “just one more run” incredibly tempting. Ten distinct heroes, each with their own quirks and abilities, add welcome variety and encourage experimenting with different play styles.
Visually, Dungeon Cards leans on charming, clean pixel art that keeps the board clear and legible, even during hectic moments. Performance is excellent, and simple one-handed controls feel natural and precise.
On the downside, the minimalist presentation means there’s almost no story, and extended play sessions can start to feel repetitive if you’re not chasing high scores or unlocks. Some runs also feel at the mercy of harsh card layouts.
Still, for anyone who enjoys tactical decision-making, roguelikes, or smart puzzle design, Dungeon Cards offers a compact, highly replayable experience that is both relaxing and ruthlessly challenging.
