GunBird 2
Arcade shooting nostalgia with flashy bosses and heroes
GunBird 2 is a lovingly crafted revival of Psikyo’s classic vertical shoot ’em up, delivering tight action, colorful visuals and plenty of replay value. At its core, it’s an old-school bullet-dodging experience: you weave through dense enemy fire, unleash powerful shots and screen-clearing bombs, and face boss patterns that fill every corner of the display.
What immediately stands out is the cast of eccentric characters, each with their own storyline and unique ending. This narrative layer is light and humorous, but it gives you a reason to replay the campaign with different heroes to see their special finales. Each character also comes with distinct shot patterns, charged skills and a spectacular “lethal move” that can turn the tide when things get overwhelming.
Controls are simple and responsive: sliding your finger moves the character, while separate buttons handle close-range skills, charged long-distance attacks and bombs. Even during the more chaotic bullet patterns, the touch controls feel precise enough for serious score-chasing.
Stages are varied and globe-trotting, from cityscapes to fantastical environments, and almost every level culminates in a gigantic boss that dominates the screen with intricate attack patterns. The visuals embrace a bright, arcade-style aesthetic, and the sound effects and music do a solid job of capturing that late-90s cabinet atmosphere.
The game offers three difficulty levels, making it approachable for newcomers but still punishing enough for genre veterans on higher settings. The optional partner system, which lets you fly alongside a second character, adds extra firepower and a “two-player” feel even when playing solo, though it is tied to in-game purchases.
GunBird 2 succeeds as a faithful, fast-paced shooter that respects its arcade roots while adding just enough modern polish to stay engaging today.
