Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle delivers pure fan service wrapped in an accessible yet surprisingly tactical experience. At first glance it looks like a flashy fighter, but underneath the Kamehamehas is a clever mix of puzzle, board game, and team-building RPG.

Combat revolves around tapping colored Ki Spheres to power up your fighters. It’s easy to pick up, but choosing the right color chains, manipulating turn order, and exploiting type advantages gives battles a satisfying layer of strategy. When you trigger a super attack, the screen fills with dramatic animations that faithfully recreate iconic scenes from the anime.

Outside of combat, you’ll move across modular, board-style stages, collecting items, fighting enemies, and triggering story nodes. The narrative uses a time-warp premise: warriors from different eras collide, guided by Trunks through an original storyline. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s a fun excuse to assemble impossible dream teams like Goku, Vegeta, and villains from multiple sagas fighting side by side.

Where Dokkan Battle really shines is in its depth. You’ll train, awaken, and evolve characters through multiple rarity tiers, unlocking new art and much stronger stats. Building the perfect squad means balancing attributes, categories, and links between characters, which keeps long-term players engaged. A constant rotation of events – story quests, fierce Dokkan events, World Tournament, Extreme Z-Battles, and brutal Super Battle Road – ensures there is always something to test your roster.

On the downside, the game leans heavily on a gacha system, and progression can feel grindy if you’re aiming for top-tier characters without spending. The interface can also be overwhelming for newcomers, packed with menus and currencies.
