Earthmate
Satellite messaging and offline maps for serious explorers
Earthmate is designed as a companion for Garmin inReach devices, transforming them into a versatile navigation and safety hub for backcountry travel. Once paired via Bluetooth, it unlocks two-way satellite messaging, detailed mapping and trip management tools aimed squarely at hikers, paddlers, overlanders and anyone who roams beyond cell coverage.
The highlight is its mapping suite. You can cache unlimited topographic maps, quad sheets and hybrid views, then navigate entirely offline with high-detail GPS trip logging. Waypoints, routes and tracks are easy to create, edit and follow, and the app syncs seamlessly with your Garmin Explore account, so planning on a larger screen and executing in the field feels cohesive.
Safety features are another strong point. Using the global Iridium satellite network through an inReach device, Earthmate lets you send and receive custom texts and emails, share your location with contacts, and, crucially, trigger an SOS from virtually anywhere. For expedition planners or guides, real-time tracking and cloud-backed storage of routes and logs add a reassuring extra layer of oversight.
The interface is functional rather than flashy, with a slight learning curve for newcomers to GPS navigation, but seasoned outdoor users will appreciate the depth of options. Performance is generally stable, and once maps are downloaded, response times are snappy even far from civilization.
The main caveat is that the most compelling features require both an inReach device and an active satellite subscription, making this ecosystem best suited to frequent adventurers rather than casual day hikers. Still, for those who regularly travel off-grid, Earthmate delivers a robust blend of navigation, communication and safety tools in a single, reliable package.
