Company of Heroes delivers deep WWII strategy on the go

Company of Heroes brings one of the most respected real-time strategy experiences to touchscreens without sacrificing the depth that made the original a classic. Set during World War II’s brutal European campaign, it puts you in command of elite American units from the beaches of Normandy through to the Falaise Pocket, with missions that reward careful planning as much as quick reflexes.

The first thing that stands out is how faithful the port is. Detailed unit models, convincing explosions and fully destructible environments recreate the chaos of the battlefield superbly. Buildings crumble, cover shifts, and the front line constantly evolves, forcing you to adapt your tactics instead of relying on brute force.

Controls are where many RTS games stumble, but the redesigned interface works surprisingly well. The Command Wheel makes issuing complex orders fast, while smart touch gestures handle movement, unit grouping and ability use. There’s still a learning curve, especially in hectic late-game encounters, but once mastered it feels natural and responsive.

Content-wise, the base campaign already offers substantial variety, from tense beach landings to urban warfare and defensive stand-offs. The Opposing Fronts and Tales of Valor expansions, available as in-app purchases, add entire new campaigns and factions, extending replay value significantly. Multiplayer skirmishes for up to four players are a welcome addition too, though they demand stable connectivity and a capable device to keep things smooth.

Performance is generally solid on newer hardware, but older or mid-range devices may struggle during large-scale clashes, and the interface can feel cramped on smaller screens. Still, these drawbacks do little to overshadow what is arguably one of the most ambitious and satisfying strategy titles available in portable form.
