Google’s Phone app reimagines the default dialer with a clear focus on safety, clarity, and ease of use. Instead of just placing calls, it becomes a smart communications hub that helps you decide which calls are worth your time.

The standout feature is its robust spam protection. The app flags suspected telemarketers, scammers, and robocalls with clear warnings, and once you block a number, it stays blocked. Coupled with Google’s extensive caller ID database, you can often see which business is ringing before you even pick up, making unknown calls far less stressful.

Call Screen is another highlight on supported devices and regions. When an unfamiliar number appears, the assistant can answer on your behalf, show you a live transcript of what the caller says, and filter out obvious spam without interrupting you. It feels like having a personal gatekeeper for your calls.

Everyday usability is excellent. The interface is clean and lightweight, with favorites and recent calls always within easy reach. Visual voicemail lets you skim transcriptions, replay messages in any order, and delete them with a tap, so you no longer have to slog through old messages just to reach the newest one. Dark mode is thoughtfully implemented for late-night use and battery savings.

Emergency support is a subtle but potentially life-saving addition. On compatible devices and regions, the app can display and share your location and key details with emergency services, even if you struggle to speak.

The main downsides are that some advanced features, like Call Screen and voicemail transcription, are limited to specific countries and devices. Still, for most users, Phone is a substantial upgrade over a basic dialer, combining smart protection, polished design, and deep Google integration into a reliable everyday companion.
