Magic Research
Build the ultimate wizard academy in this deep idle sim
Magic Research is a surprisingly rich mix of incremental game, management sim, and visual novel, wrapped in a clean, text-forward presentation. You play as the headmaster of a fledgling magic academy whose lofty goal is to dominate the Tournament of Magic, and the journey there is far more engaging than it first appears.
Gameplay revolves around juggling multiple systems: researching new magical schools, assigning apprentices and researchers, expanding your campus, and crafting ever-more-powerful spells. With over a hundred spells to unlock, each with distinct effects and synergies, experimentation quickly becomes addictive. The joy comes from finding efficient setups that automate menial tasks so you can focus on higher-level decisions.
Progression feels cleverly paced. New mechanics and “hidden” features appear regularly, preventing the usual idle-game stagnation. Over five dozen secret storylines introduce permanent, game-altering choices, adding a strong sense of narrative and replayability. The retirement mechanic (a prestige system) lets you reset your run with lasting bonuses, dramatically speeding up subsequent playthroughs and inviting long-term optimization.
Visually, Magic Research is minimalist, favoring interface clarity over flashy graphics. That may disappoint players looking for elaborate animations, but it also makes the experience snappy and easy to manage in short or long sessions. The text is well-written, with light humor and an intriguing lore backdrop that gradually unfolds.
On the downside, the sheer number of systems can feel overwhelming early on, and the game expects you to enjoy reading and tweaking menus. It’s not an action-heavy experience; there is a lot of strategizing, planning, and waiting.
For fans of deep idle games and management sims, Magic Research is a standout: content-dense, thoughtfully designed, and capable of easily delivering 40+ hours of compelling “just one more upgrade” gameplay.
