Ni no Kuni: Cross Worlds is an ambitious online action RPG that brings Level-5’s beloved universe into a living, shared world. Powered by Unreal Engine 4 and framed by Studio Ghibli-inspired art and Joe Hisaishi’s sweeping score, it feels strikingly close to playing an interactive animated film.

You begin as a tester of the in-universe game “Soul Divers,” quickly pulled into a story where virtual fantasy and real-world stakes blur. The narrative is classic Ni no Kuni: warm, melancholic, and whimsical, with plenty of charming side characters and cutscenes that reward players who care about lore as much as loot.

Character creation revolves around five distinct classes: Swordsman, Witch, Engineer, Rogue, and Destroyer. Each has a clear combat identity, and switching between elemental weapons keeps battles dynamic. Fights are real-time, with dodges, skills, and ultimates, but there is also an optional auto-combat system for grinding routine encounters.

Familiars are the real stars. These adorable creatures act as both collectors’ items and powerful battle companions. Building teams with complementary skills, then watching them unleash flashy abilities, adds a satisfying layer of team-building strategy. The farm-like Familiars’ Forest offers a cozy break from combat, letting you decorate, harvest, and cook at your own pace.

Social features are robust: joining a kingdom unlocks co-op events, large-scale battles, and communal progression that makes the world feel truly inhabited. However, the game leans heavily into gacha and premium currencies, and late-game progression can feel grindy or pay-influenced.

Performance is generally solid, but the lavish visuals and crowded scenes can tax lower-end devices. If you can handle the technical demands and don’t mind some auto-play and monetization pressure, Ni no Kuni: Cross Worlds delivers a visually stunning, content-rich adventure that captures much of the magic of its storied franchise.
