TAP LA
Tap to ride LA transit with seamless contactless payments
TAP LA is the official transit companion for getting around Los Angeles County, turning your phone into a fully functional transit card for 27 participating systems, including LA Metro. Instead of fumbling for cash or plastic, you simply tap your device on the validator and board. You don’t even need to wake your screen, which makes the experience feel fast and frictionless.
The core of TAP LA is its smart fare management. You can buy passes or load Stored Value for multiple agencies, switch between them as needed, and manage several TAP cards in one account—ideal for families or caregivers. Support for credit and debit cards, account cash and Google Pay provides welcome flexibility, and reduced-fare riders (seniors, students, people with disabilities and low-income users) are well covered.
Beyond payments, TAP LA doubles as a planning companion. Trip Tools let you search routes, discover nearby transit options, check real-time arrivals and save favorite stops and destinations. If you use Metro Bike Share, you can also access that program through the same account, helping unify your multimodal travel in a sprawling region where connections matter.
The interface focuses on clear balances, passes and trip info, which keeps daily use straightforward. However, as with many transit tools, real-time data quality can vary depending on the agency, and the service is inherently limited to Los Angeles County systems. Travelers from elsewhere won’t find it useful outside that network.
For regular LA riders, though, TAP LA offers a convincing blend of convenience and control. It streamlines paying fares, keeps your cards protected with account-based management and adds journey-planning features that make buses, trains and bikes feel more coordinated. If you rely on public transit in greater Los Angeles, this is a near-essential companion.
