Hacker's Keyboard
Desktop style typing with full control keys and precision
Hacker’s Keyboard is a niche yet powerful choice for anyone who misses a true computer-style layout on a touchscreen. Instead of the cramped, simplified designs of most default keyboards, it offers a full five-row configuration complete with Esc, Ctrl, Alt, and dedicated number keys, plus arrow keys for accurate cursor movement.
The standout benefit is how closely it mirrors a traditional PC keyboard. Punctuation sits where you expect it, the number row is always visible, and modifier keys support multitouch, so common shortcuts like Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V or Ctrl+A feel natural. This makes it especially valuable for SSH sessions in apps like ConnectBot, terminal work, remote desktop, coding, or editing configuration files where Tab, Esc and arrow keys are essential.
Customization focuses on function rather than flashy themes. You can adjust layout options and enable completion dictionaries through separate plug‑in packages, and it can also use dictionaries from AnySoftKeyboard language packs for predictive text. The interface is clearly based on older AOSP Gingerbread design, so it looks dated, but its utilitarian style serves clarity and key visibility very well.
There are some drawbacks. Localization of the full 5‑row layout is incomplete for several languages, and right‑to‑left scripts such as Arabic and Hebrew are not reliably supported on older systems. Some apps simply ignore advanced keys because they were never programmed to handle them, which can be frustrating if you expect system‑wide behavior.
Hacker’s Keyboard is not aimed at casual typists looking for swipes, stickers, or aggressive autocorrect. It shines for power users, developers, and administrators who want precise control and a familiar desktop layout. If you often work with terminals, remote machines, or text-heavy tasks, it can transform your typing experience.
